As he voted “No,” he said emphatically:

“I want you to remember that I opposed this proposal!”

The only board member opposed to the proposal and the one who contributed nothing positive to the discussion prior to the vote is the one who voted no.

His only objective appeared to be to lay the groundwork to prove that he was the wisest person on the board.  If the project he opposed was recognized as a failure in the future it would confirm his wisdom.

If things went wrong, he would promptly remind us he had been the only person in the room today wise enough to predict the future.  Possibly, he believed that would also strengthen his argument that our board would make better decisions in the future if we followed his advice.

Did he really expect the project to be a failure, or in the event it failed, was his objective to set the stage to state, “I told you, but you did not listen to me?”

I don’t know because I am not able to read his mind.

However, I know that if the project is a failure, he will try to capitalize on it. I can hear him saying,

“I told you …”

So what is the takeaway here?

Never Say – I Told You!

No one wants to hear it.

It will not enhance people’s respect for your wisdom.

If you ever, under any circumstances, say, “I told you … ,“ it will cause people to dislike you and want to separate from you.

Not only will it cause people to dislike you, even more importantly, you will lose the respect of the very people you are trying to impress.
