Do you realize … nothing happens until somebody sells something?

I am amazed that some people have such a difficult time determining what is important to the organization that provides their employment.

Most of us view the organization we work for by what radiates from our position.  For the receptionist, the most important thing is a warm, friendly, helpful greeting to all visitors.  For the accountant, accurate bookkeeping is the center of and most important activity.  For the person in the warehouse, it is accurate and careful receiving, storing and shipping of merchandise.  For the lawyer, nothing is more important than well worded and properly executed documents.

What is most important to your organization, to any organization, to every organization?

The answer is simple and clear.

Nothing Happens Until Somebody Sells Something

Think about it.

Before I retired from Chick-fil-A, I emphasized more than anything else this simple statement.

If you are not selling chicken, you better be supporting someone who is!

Until somebody sold chicken, I was not needed.  Until somebody sold chicken, there was no need for any home office employees.  Until somebody sold chicken, there was no need for managers or any other workers in the restaurants.

At the time I retired, there were 30,000 people employed by Chick-fil-A, its franchisees and affiliates. Today, there are over 100,000. Not a single one of us was needed until somebody sold chicken.

That’s why I continuously reminded myself and every person within the organization, “If you are not selling chicken, you better be supporting someone who is.”

Your organization only needs you to sell or support whatever you provide.  It may be a product or service.  Before you ask, the answer is the same even if you work for a non-profit or government organization.

Think about it.

Are you selling healthcare, mail delivery, bus rides, entertainment, shoes, insurance, groceries or government services?  If you are not the one selling the product or service, you better be supporting someone who is.

Nothing Happens Until Somebody Sells Something

No employee is needed until somebody sells something.  If you are not selling, your purpose is to support the person who is selling.

Once a product or service is sold, everyone should be focused on producing, delivering and servicing the customer.

This is simple.  Don’t complicate it with endless buts and what-ifs.

Remember.

If you are not selling ____________ , you better be supporting someone who is!
